Energy plan public hearings announced
After more than 6 months of anticipation and hard work put forth by Vermonters all across the state, the Shumlin Administration’s comprehensive energy plan was released last week. Parts of the plan are visionary but we need action, not just vision.
VPIRG Launches Redeem to Rebuild!
Redeem to Rebuild is a state wide bottle drive to raise money for Vermont farms that suffered losses due to Tropical Storm Irene. All donations will benefit the Vermont Farm Disaster Relief Fund – established by the Vermont Community Foundation in partnership with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture. This fund will provide grants to farms of all sizes throughout the state that were unfortunate victims of Tropical Storm Irene.

Day three: Entergy turned a corner and put in a strong push down the home stretch, but the state also did well. Ultimately, I think they fought to a draw on day three which means that the overall three day hearing favored the state.

If Day 1 of the Vermont Yankee court case was a roller coaster, the second day was more of a “slow and steady wins the race” kind of day. From witness one through the close of the day’s proceedings nine hours later the state largely just kept adding to their lead in the case.

The first day of the Entergy vs. Vermont court case was a roller coaster. I went in with great optimism, feeling that the law is on the state’s side and that justice will prevail. Then I met Entergy’s corporate lawyer team.

On September 6th, 2011 VPIRG, in partnership with the Conservation Law Foundation, filed an amicus (“friend of the court”) brief in support of Vermont’s case against Entergy’s lawsuit.

Voting in the 2011 VPIRG Board of Trustees election is open now through October 31, 2011. Members in good standing as of Sept. 1, 2011 are eligible to vote.
Victory in Barre-common sense wins.
Last month the Barre Development Review Board voted 6-0 to deny a local midwife’s request to operate a small office out of her home after hearing from neighbors who argued that “women — particularly pregnant women — would have difficulty safely backing out of (the midwife’s) driveway.” After hearing this, VPIRG invited our members to take action, and the response was overwhelming!
