You’ve probably seen the news about President Trump’s so-called “Anti-Weaponization Fund.” But let’s call it what it is: a blatantly corrupt political slush fund.
Here’s why this is so outrageous…
The Trump administration is creating a nearly $1.8 billion taxpayer-funded program to “compensate” Trump allies and political loyalists who claim they were unfairly investigated or prosecuted.
At the same time, the deal shields Donald Trump, his family members, and Trump businesses from IRS investigation — forever.
Think about that.
President Trump – a convicted felon – has created a giant pool of public money overseen by his appointees, with little transparency, weak oversight, and enormous potential for abuse.
What could possibly go wrong?
This isn’t just a payout to Trump loyalists. This is a license for the Trump syndicate to steal from American taxpayers for the rest of time.
This is exactly the kind of “high crimes and misdemeanors” the Constitution was designed to guard against. But Republicans in Congress and on the Supreme Court are unlikely to stop it.
And while this administration is handing out favors to corrupt insiders, working families are struggling.
Gas prices have surged. Grocery bills keep rising. Health insurance is unaffordable for millions of Americans. Housing and childcare costs are crushing family budgets.
Trump’s slush fund won’t lower costs, improve healthcare, or strengthen democracy. It will add to the national debt while diverting public resources toward his partners-in-crime.
No doubt Vermont’s congressional delegation — Senators Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch, and Representative Becca Balint — will do everything they can to expose and stop this abuse of taxpayer dollars.
But public pressure – from people like you and me – matters. That’s why VPIRG is joining citizens and organizations across the country in demanding an end to this corrupt scheme.
Todd Blanche, Trump’s former personal attorney and now acting Attorney General, is one of the key figures devising and overseeing this effort. Americans deserve answers from him about why taxpayer money is being used to reward criminals.
If President Trump can use your tax dollars to reward allies and shield his family enterprise from all accountability, democracy itself is at risk. Now we understand there are legitimate reasons why you may not wish to add your name to our letter, but for all those who are willing and interested, please co-sign our letter to Todd Blanche today.
