300+ advocacy organizations join in national opposition to mega-mergers

VPIRG joined over 300 other farming, beekeeping, farm worker, religious, food safety, and conservation advocacy groups this week in calling for the U.S. Department of Justice to put consumer and farmer interests above corporate interests, by conducting a thorough investigation of the proposed mergers between the world’s largest agrochemical and seed companies – Bayer AG with Monsanto, Syngenta with ChemChina, and Dow Chemical with DuPont.

The letter sent to members of Congress, state attorneys general, and the DOJ emphasized the wide-ranging threats posed by these massive mergers to global food security, innovation, farm worker health, and food and farming costs. If all three mergers take place, the new companies would control nearly 70 percent of the world’s pesticide market, more than 61 percent of commercial seed sales and 80 percent of the U.S. corn-seed market.
