Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law (Act 148) goes into effect today.
The law was passed unanimously by the Vermont legislature in 2012. VPIRG believes that Act 148 will be a great complement to our state’s most successful recycling law – the Bottle Bill.
Act 148 will provide an excellent opportunity to expand recycling rates for items not covered by the bottle redemption program. Among some of the changes taking effect today:
- Recyclables will be banned from landfills.
- Haulers must offer residents recycling pickup without a separate charge.
- Statewide unit based pricing takes effect, requiring residential trash charges be based on volume or weight.
- Recycling containers must be placed alongside trash containers in all public spaces, such as parks and municipal buildings, except in restrooms.
- Transfer stations/Drop-off Facilities must accept leaf and yard debris.
