VPIRG filed a motion to intervene in the case before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regarding the proposed fracked gas pipeline Vermont Gas wants to build underneath Lake Champlain all the way to New York. This is the latest step in the VPIRG’s legal fight to stop the proposed pipeline.
“It’s almost basic common sense that whoever is evaluating and deciding upon whether this pipeline is a good idea needs to look at and consider all of the factors, all the environmental factors and the rate factor, and neither New York or Vermont can do that,” VPIRG lawyer James Dumont said Thursday.
VPIRG, along with a growing number of Vermont citizens and businesses, is opposing the project because it would continue the states reliance on fracked gas and fossil fuels, and would become a road block for Vermont’s renewable energy goals. Other concerns include the environmental impacts of the pipeline going through farmlands, wetlands, and under Lake Champlain.
