By a margin of 26 to 4 the Senate voted to retire the aging Vermont Yankee nuclear plant as scheduled. This historic vote marks the first time a state legislature has been able to deny a nuclear plant a 20-year license extension. After generating thousands of constituent calls in to legislators in recent days, hundreds of Vermonters crowded the State House to witness the vote.

On Wednesday VPIRG and a number of our allies met with the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and got some great news.
One of Entergy’s key scare tactics has been the idea that the feds might force Vermont to allow Yankee to continue past its expiration date. Now the NRC has indicated they'll respect Vermont's right to choose our energy future.
Breaking: Feds won’t interfere in VY’s retirement
On Wednesday July 14th VPIRG Clean Energy Program Director James Moore met with the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (the NRC - the arm of the federal government that regulates nuclear plants) and a number of our allies in the campaign to retire Vermont Yankee, and got some great news.
Chairman Gregory Jaczko said, in essence, that the NRC won’t be interfering with the Vermont legislature’s decision to retire Vermont Yankee on schedule.1
VPIRG, thousands of Vermonters urge candidates to lead on clean energy

As part of a summer long effort, VPIRG's summer outreach staff has collected thousands of postcards throughout the state from Vermonters urging the gubernatorial candidates to make clean energy a top priority in their campaigns. VPIRG’s canvassers have talked to thousands of Vermonters across the state, and the message they’re hearing is clear; Vermonters want safe, clean, local energy.

Just days after announcing a new radioactive leak and weeks after fixing an ongoing leak of tritium, VT Yankee narrowly avoided a shutdown on Wednesday due to yet another leak.
Despite Yankee's near constant problems, Entergy executives are doing everything they can to get the 38 year old plant relicensed past its current expiration date.
