Senate Votes to Close VT Yankee

By a margin of 26 to 4 the Senate voted to retire the aging Vermont Yankee nuclear plant as scheduled. This historic vote marks the first time a state legislature has been able to deny a nuclear plant a 20-year license extension. After generating thousands of constituent calls in to legislators in recent days, hundreds of Vermonters crowded the State House to witness the vote.

Weatherization skillshops coming up

An open letter to the VPIRG community from Clay Francis, VPIRG's new Clean Energy Advocate. Clay will be working with Clean Energy Program Director James Moore on building weatherization, heating fuels efficiency and other clean energy campaigns:

I just started as VPIRG's new Clean Energy Advocate in the middle of record setting heat waves, and probably the best part of my job so far has been seeing Vermonters react to the obvious effects of global warming here in our state. Vermonters don't just want to turn on the AC, they want to do something real about the heat.

VPIRG urges candidates to lead on clean energy

As part of a summer long effort VPIRG's outreach staff has collected thousands of postcards throughout the state from Vermonters urging the candidates for governor to make clean energy a top priority in their campaigns.

On Tuesday morning over a dozen VPIRG canvassers took a short break from biking the roads of Vermont to continue their efforts at the Church St. Marketplace.

VPIRG’s canvassers have talked to thousands of Vermonters across the state, and the message they’re hearing is clear; Vermonters want safe, clean, local energy.
