Protecting Vermonters' personal information

VPIRG backed legislation passed in 2006 requires businesses and government agencies that collect personal information to notify consumers about any security breaches and prohibits data collectors from intentionally disseminating a person’s social security number. Data collectors must also now ensure the confidentiality and proper destruction of documents and materials that contain personal or financial information about their customers.
