Democracy Programs

Our system of representative democracy relies on an engaged citizenry and accurate representation, yet voter turnout lags behind many other democracies, while mishaps, confusion and partisan administration have raised questions about the fairness of elections. In addition money plays far too great a role in deciding elections; with contributions from a few groups and individuals unduly influencing who wins.

To fix these problems, VPIRG is fighting to:

  • Minimize the influence of big money and special interests over elections
  • Ensure that Vermont’s leaders are elected with majority support
  • Remove all unnecessary barriers to voting in order to maximize voter participation
  • Maximize voter confidence in our voting systems by ensuring transparency and accountability
